The County of Ulek, properly known as the County Palatine of Ulek, is a political state of the Flanaess, and one of the three Ulek States (the other two being the Duchy of Ulek, and the Principality of Ulek).
Approximately 323 years before the dawn of the Common Year calendar, Immris of the Suloise house of Rhola founded a city, and later a state, called Jurnre; this was the city that remains its capital to this day. This state became absorbed into what is now the County of Ulek.
Some time between 500 and 600 OR (-145 to -45 CY), one Count Cartair, one of the most beloved of the County of Ulek's rulers, ruled the County of Ulek in a time of strife between the three Ulek States, and fortifications were evidently constructed along the Kewl River and Old River. Between 55 CY and 155 CY, the Ulek States were strong allies of one another but overshadowed by the growing kingdoms of Keoland and Aerdy.
The County of Ulek was incorporated peacefully into the kingdom of Keoland in 292 CY. Around 361 CY, at the height of Keoland's imperial conquests, the County of Ulek expelled Keoland's royal garrisons, although this was accomplished without bloodshed (enchantment magic was employed, however). Keoland didn't formally recognize the County's independence until approximately a century after the fact.
The Hateful Wars embroiled the County of Ulek as well as the other Ulek States. Jurnre was besieged by refugee goblins and orcs at this time, though it did not fall. The druids of Ulek used their healing skills to assist their allies, while the County as a whole provided food and raw materials, primarily to the Principality of Ulek.
The modern County of Ulek is generally located in the southwestern portion of the Flanaess, and is considered part of the Sheldomar Valley region. It is bordered by the Lortmil Mountains to the north and east, by the Old River to the east and south, and by the Kewl River to the West.
As of 591 CY, the population of the County of Ulek totaled 370,000 persons, the majority (almost 80%) being humans of Oeridian, Flan, and Suel descent. Gnomes are the next most populous group (8%), followed by halflings (6%, predominantly of the lightfoot variety), with the remainder being a mix of elves, dwarves, half-elves, and half-orcs.
The most widely-spoken languages in the County of Ulek include Common, Gnomish, Keolandish, and Halfling.
The national capital is Jurnre.
The County of Ulek's coat of arms is blazoned thus: Purpure, a unicorn rampant argent.
The County of Ulek is noted for producing foodstuffs, copper, silver, and low- to average-quality gems.
The County of Ulek's standard coinage consists of the gold goldsun (gp), electrum mirrorpool (ep), silver silvermoon (sp), and copper coppercask (cp).
