Franz Torkeep, also known as Franz, Lord Torkeep, is a knight bannerette of Holy Shielding, member of the Shield Lands' Council of Lords, and earl (formerly baron) of the stronghold of Torkeep.

Franz is a powerfully-built human male with tightly-cropped hair and a pencil-thin mustache. Though intelligent and wise, he is frequently a bit rash, having little patience for sitting idle while suffering takes place or important deeds remain undone. Franz is outspoken, speaking his mind despite the consequences, a trait leading to wildly differing opinions of the Lord of Torkeep.

Like many of his order, Franz is a follower of Heironeous. When adventuring or on campaign, he wears a horned helmet and carries a powerful magical sword. Franz prefers the safety of his fortress, but will leave it should duty require it.

In addition to his connections as a high-ranking Knight of Holy Shielding, Franz is acquainted with Tenser the archmage, and has adventured with Agath of Thrunch, Rakehell Chert, Reynard Yargrove, Rowena of the Silverbrow, and Warnes Starcoat.

During his time adventuring with Rowena, Franz considered her "desirable, but out of place."

His activities in the past and present have marked him as a foe of both Iggwilv and Iuz.

In the late 570s CY, Baron Torkeep, at the behest of Tenser, joined Agath of Thrunch, Rakehell Chert, Reynard Yargrove, Rowena of the Silverbrow, and Warnes Starcoat on a mission to rescue the Crook of Rao from the Isle of the Ape, thereby thwarting the plans of Iggwilv.

Since the end of the Greyhawk Wars, Franz has committed himself to the War of Reclamation. Lord Torkeep's ancestral holdings were the first lands beyond Bright Sentry and Critwall to be reclaimed. The tale of the Battle of Torkeep, recounted by bards across the land, has becomes immensely popular, even beyond the reclaimed Shield Lands.
